The Traveler: a Short Story by Lara Whybrow
He had a plan. And a great plan it was. He needed to get to…The Other Side. Onwards the
intrepid traveler trundled, onwards across The Great White Expanse. He did not
stop. He did not dawdle. His mission was too important. Over the giant mountain
he trod, step by step, legs marching in unison. What was the reason behind all
this? What could possibly motivate him to undertake such a mission?
On The Other
Side was It. The one thing he had been yearning for all his life. And he had to
have it. Now. But The Great White Expanse was so…expansive. Would it ever end?
He felt like he had taken a hundred million steps and only emptied one teacup
out of the never-ending ocean. But It would make it all worth it. It would be
worth the weariness he felt. Must…carry…on…
Finally the
end was in site. Oh joy! Oh what a relief! Only a couple more steps to go! His
mind was filled with visions of what he would do with It. It was almost sinful
how much fun he was going to have! Plod, plod, plod. Only a little longer to go
for the intrepid traveler.
He had been
deceived! The end he thought so near was merely an illusion! The great white
expanse stretched on even further! Oh, what a torment this was to his soul. But
he would not let this get in his way. He would get to It even if it killed him.
And kill him it would – because no mere mortal was meant to cross The Great White
Expanse. Must…carry…on…
At last! He
could see the end of the great white expanse! But wait, something was wrong.
The air currents were changing, something was coming down on him. He could see
the shadow of something big approaching swiftly! Must get a-
SWAT! And
the spider on the roof was crushed into a sticky blob.
THE END.
